Cons really long hours , no structure. Great and fun workplace environment. Overall the job is amazing, management is great.
The workplace is amazing however and you will come to love it there. Yes There are 2 helpful reviews 2 No There are 1 unhelpful reviews 1. This job was barebones. The point of sales system is extremely outdated. Overall it is a great job for a teenager who does not have any financial responsibilities.
Pros Around books, inclusive culture. Cons Low compensation , short breaks, no future. I was with this company for nearly three years. Starting off, it was just like any other retail job in a store. The only exception is that employees cover all jobs on the sales floor, not just a specific one cashier, stocking, etc. An employee is expected to balance all of these tasks while attending to customers in an often understaffed environment.
Compensation is not great - my store was routinely 2 in the region for sales but employees start at minimum and have a hard cap for maximum pay I believe it was Pros Fun culture, decent discount, not very challenging. Cons low pay, high amount of tasks, low staffing. Low stress to me even during the busy Christmas season. In fact, I preferred Christmas season. I worked there 30 years ago at federal minimum wage before benefits were available for FT non-management employees.
Pros Merchandise, atmosphere, people. This job required upselling memberships and other items, those who performed well were forced to work every holiday and weekend because of the high customer traffic but those who were low performers received every weekend and holiday off. The pay was very low and not worth the amount of time and sacrifice they required.
Management at the Jackson, TN location was toxic. Pros Employee discount. Cons short breaks, low pay, no weekends off. Awesome environment! Cheap company! I loved working at BAM, I just wish they paid better than minimum wage, expecting you to increase your own pay through metrics and hoping that they decide to do employee reviews and that you met all your metrics to even be considered for a raise.
Pros The coolest books and items all the time. Cons Hard to get above minimum wage. The good is you meet some great people the bad is too much time selling magazines and cards and not focusing on the bad moral in the store and the pay could be much better.
Pros Get to check out books. Cons Pay is horrible no room to move up. Associates are helpful and friendly, both to each other and the customers.
However, corporate makes it very difficult to deal with day-to-day operations given their complete disorganization and propensity for large-scale projects, which are often not announced until days before their proposed execution and are chronically understaffed, meaning that these projects are often left to be completed entirely by people when it should be, realistically, an person job. Cons Horrible pay, no benefits , corporate is a nightmare.
Company chooses money and profit over employees at every chance. Paid me more to sit in an empty store and run curbside pickup despite me mentioning how uncomfortable I was with the idea.
No raises for two straight years without a reason despite highly favorable reviews. Does not compensate part time employees well at all.

You will also be required to sell company-sponsored programs like those of membership and magazine subscriptions etc. I do love books and got to love many friendships I cultivated. To see that face light up when you fulfill your customers request or need is delightful. That said, there is a vast gulf between high-level managers and corporate and the managers and employees who work in their stores. Individual stores have to muddle through unwieldy corporate directives and inadequate pay for their work.
