This is my first review of a movie on here and I was inspired to do it after reading petit76 negative view on the film. I am also an avid horror fan pretty much seen them all and I thought this film was excellent! Acting was very good and the storyline is as good as you will get with horror films nowadays which is such hard genre to be original with. Thats the problem with IMDb nowadays almost every film gets a negative review.
This was a most enjoyable horror with some nice fright scenes and I would recommend it to anyone with a spare 90 Min's. FAQ 2. Is this movie based on a true story? Adult Written by Daddio74 June 16, You know, I liked it. There was no gratuitous sex or unnecessary language that I recall, nor boozing or brawling.
If you do, give it a chance. Ok, spoiler fans, I love a happy ending, and this film has one The Family gets back together! The Dad makes a sacrifice that proves he does. The bad news? Adult Written by Ethan A. March 14, What I think The Possession was an incredibly enjoyable film. I fell in love with this film the first time I watched this movie. But it is so not for kids.
Adult Written by wonder dove August 14, The story is great based on a true story was unexpected , good effects, the scares were definitely there and the cast did a wonderful job. The story takes off with a young girl named Emily Em and her older sister who are spending a weekend with their dad in his new place after getting a divorce.
One day at a yard sale, Em asks her dad to buy her a unique box she becomes mysteriously attracted to. After she opens the box and discovers some strange objects, Em starts acting oddly and soon becomes violent, even at school. Her obsession with the box grows stronger until Emily is no longer herself but luckily her father thinks fast and learns that what's inside the box or what WAS inside the box is actually evil and contains the spirit of a Jewish demon that has possessed his daughter.
He meets up with a Rabbi who's son agrees to help him out, later performing an exorcism that may or may not work. Violence is quite strong with lots of screaming, crying, chasing and yelling during a scary exorcism. Also involving children, a girl beats up a boy in class, a man gets his hand viciously stabbed by a fork, a dentists teeth fall out and his mouth is bloody, creepy fingers are seen at the back of the throat which causes choking in a couple scenes, a woman's eyes bleed, a woman is viciously thrown around a room and killed right after you see her face melt off, a child looks like she's being slapped by her father but it's really the demon inside her, the demon is shown and appears disfigured and downright creepy, a devilish hand comes out of a mans mouth.
Language isn't too bad and is accurate for it's rating. No sexual content except the fact that the mother lives with a new boyfriend after divorcing the father. Highly recommended horror flick for viewers 15 and over perfect Halloween movie for the teens - and adults - too! Adult Written by Bperk23 October 30, Scary This title contains: Positive role models.
Adult Written by Shivom Oza October 4, Certainly Not! A young girl gets possessed by an evil spirit which trapped in a mysterious box. Although there is nothing in the film that will scare the living daylights out of you, the makers have done well to not try too hard either. The film starts with an old woman trying to open a mysterious box.
However, before she tries to destroy the box, she is thrown violently around the room by an unseen force. It was a really beautiful and interesting scene, and the CGI on the scanned images was really good. However, the way that the doctor's didn't behave or respond to the power surges that caused moments of power outage and the disturbing image of a demonic face on the scan, that was just priceless.
Never seen that much disinterest and lack of attention by doctors ever. The ending was laughable and predictable to the point where it was starting to be physically painful. And the dybbuk itself was nowhere near being scary when you finally got to see it. All in all, the movie does have its moments, unfortunately, it just didn't fully deliver the impact that it had the potential to. This feature from Lionsgate is not just creepy; it is damn right scary. On an ordinary weekend featuring forbidden pizza, Em is curiously obsessed with an antique wooden box at a yard sale; so dad buys it for her.
Before long Em's behavior becomes erratic and questionable; she seems not like herself. Clyde and Stephanie believe EM's attraction to the box may be the cause of this disturbance. What they later discover is the antique box was built to hold a dibbuk Talk about a white-knuckle, "jumpy" movie; some very disturbing sequences containing violence. The super special effects as usual come near the finale.
In-your-face scary may be putting it mildly. Of course the best acting comes from Miss Calis. The Possession is a supernatural horror film that has a story based on the allegedly haunted dybbuk box. Based on a true story, it is the terrifying account of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil. It is directed by Ole Bornedal, who cited films like The Exorcist as an inspiration.
Clyde and Stephanie Brenek see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale.
But as Em's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dybbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.
Obviously,it is a very standard horror tale that scores a point or two for some unintentional laughs, but none for originality or scares as they are blandly familiar that there are no real surprises especially those familiar with films of the same genres. It is an underwhelming supernatural horror picture that is somewhat creepy but easily forgettable. Overall,it could be considered a poor man's The Exorcist.
Music is by Anton Sanko and cinematography by Dan Lausten. Film is based upon a story involving a Jewish Dybbuk Box that unleashes a demonic spirit that tries to take control of a human being. Actually it really isn't as bad as the ratings it currently holds on the big internet movie sites. Based on a true story of course it is since that is the go to phrase in horror these days , The Possession boasts some very good acting performances, some genuinely chilling scenes I dread my next X-RAY and a good emotional pull as the Brenek family, already struggling to come to terms with the divorce of the elders, has to fight to keep the youngest daughter from total inhabitation by the demon Abizu.
It also turns out to be deftly filmed, with creepy sound effects and muted colours aiding the atmosphere. Is it fresh and exciting? A new dawn for the possessed child sub-genre of horror? No of course not. Yet it has a throwback quality and care of characters on the page that lifts it above stinker status.
Crucially, also, is that it offers up a different spin on the Exorcism formula. The PG and 15 certificates tell you it's not going to be gore strewn and horrifically pant soiling, and that turns out to be the case, but this is most definitely a good thing here and keeps the horror on a human character driven level.
Good but not great, but a decent night in if ultimately you wont remember much about it a month later. One day at a garage sale Em gets a box with Hebrew written all over it. She opens it up and begins acting strangely.
It seems there's a demon in the box who possesses Em. The demon starts killing or hurting people through Em. The father finds out but what can he do to stop it? I expected the worst. PG rated horror films are usually stupid, not scary and are dull. Surprisingly this wasn't bad. It's well acted with an interesting script and some spooky sequences.
The exorcism at the end goes all out and is pretty strong. There's no stupid humor in this one and there's a grim tone throughout. This is also the first horror movie I've seen with a Jewish demon! Great music score too. Horror fans will like this one. On the one hand I really want to be positive about this movie, since it's definitely a better entry than most other recent modern horror flicks but on the other hand, the movie at the same time has very little new to offer and is being a bit too simplistic and formulaic.
The foremost reason why this movie still seems to be working out so well is because of the way it got done. It's definitely a fine made movie and despite its low budget, this is definitely some quality stuff. The problems are more with its story. It's not just that it isn't being anything original but it's also a problem that there isn't always an awful lot happening in the movie.
You also definitely feel that the movie could had gotten to its point way earlier on already, also since we all basically know from the start on already what direction the movie shall go at with its story.
The movie itself however still tries to surprise you and keep you in the dark for too long, which can get a bit annoying. It could had worked if the movie indeed pulled off something original or did something unexpected half way through but the movie really never does any of this. I also do feel that the movie is stuck somewhere between two different styles.
In essence this is being a typical and serious genre flick, while the movie at times also picks a more light tone, with some of its characters and relieving comedy. It's not always balanced out that well and this mostly goes at the expense of the movie its horror.
No, this by no means is being a very scary horror flick. It doesn't have any jump scares and it's also a movie without any blood or gore in it. For its horror, it mostly relies on its atmosphere and its build up to things but since there isn't really ever a good payoff to things, the horror mostly falls flat.
Especially for those who are familiar with the genre and have seen dozens of movies, that all are very similar to this one, already. I still really do feel that I should give the movie some credit. Like I said before, it's absolutely way better and also a better made movie than just the average modern genre attempt but it's a problem that not everything in it works out for its horror and that the movie is being just a tad bit too standard and also simplistic with its story.
With just a bit more originality to it, this movie would had been great! I now really can't call it more than just a better than average one. Ever since "The Exorcist" and later "The Ring" successfully made scary movies casting girls as the possessed everyone wants to follow suit.
I'll admit that children do enhance the creepy factor, but it's not an automatic. This movie did not deliver any significant suspense, thrills or horror. Besides making the exorcism Judaic, this movie had nothing new to bring to the possession type genre.
This was a run of the mill bland movie. There were the divorced parents, the naive and innocent younger daughter, the sassy more astute older daughter, and mom's new boyfriend. Throw a cursed box into the mix and you have another vanilla demon movie. When Clyde Jeffrey Dean Morgan , freshly divorced from Stephanie Kyra Sedgwick has his two daughters to his new house for the weekend, younger daughter Em Natasha Calis takes a fancy to a carved wooden box at a yard sale.
We could have warned her against this, because we have already seen in the prologue that this box harbours some sort of malevolent supernatural force. However she acquires it, bad things happen etc. And I won't give away anything else. I have no complaint with the fact that The Possession is an utterly generic possession-themed horror film, nor that it is relatively light on the staples of horror movies, namely horror there are some made-you-jump moments, some loud noises, some spooky makeup, a few effects, and a bit of CGI, all of which do their jobs reasonably well.
I have no complaint with the performances which are all good, especially Natasha Calis whose career is going to suffer due to the fact that Chloe Moretz got there first. I have no complaint with the notion that we should be introduced to, and sympathise with, these characters and their family dysfunctionality so that we have an emotional stake in the horror that is waiting for them: we need to care about them, and see that the family breakup which is damaging them was unnecessary, and hope that they get through this awful trial, and that Em can be rescued.
But gee whiz, get on with it, willya? The first half of this movie spends so much time setting up the family dynamics that the supernatural shenanigans - and that's why we're there, guys, not for the family soap - come almost as an afterthought, and seem rushed.
The potential which this film had is completely lost in ploddy pacing. Oh, and by the way, you can lose the "based on a true story" title card - it no longer convinces. After buying a present for his estranged daughter, a man finds that the box contained a powerful demonic entity that slowly possesses her and eventually forces him to come to grips with the supernatural in order to finally beat it. Overall this one was quite enjoyable if slightly flawed. Among the more positives aspects here is the fact that this one manages to great enhance the idea of her being possessed by really going for a more understated idea than usual to account for the growing suspicion, using nervous ticks, irrational outbursts of anger and turning away to hide the possession giveaways of eye-manipulations and eerie whispering that goes hand-in-hand with the obsessive fixation on the box which all manage to make the first half quite a bit of fun slowly spelling out it's tell-tale signs.
When it does shift into higher gear in the second half with a more pronounced bit of supernatural displays, from the swarming bedroom of locusts and the demonic taunting that leads into the most disturbing scene in the whole film, it gets a lot of mileage out of her turn and becomes quite fun due to that being added on to the slow- building first half.
The finale is all based around the actual exorcism of the demon and manages to run nicely enough by making the creatures' unusual origin a nice focal point away from the typical style usually found here which is quite nicely handled, along with the tense action and thrilling encounters within that make it quite exciting. These here are enough to raise this up enough over its few minor flaws. The biggest issue within this one is the fact that it manages to carry on with the oblivious parents and the doubting figures long after it's realistically feasible since it plays the big trump card of the infestation with locusts despite not being the slightest bit annoyed with them there so early on in the film that it should've been the start of trying to figure out what's wrong with her instead of being simply a great shock gag the way it comes off here which is pretty irrational in real life as that would warrant far more action on their account than is called for here.
Still, it's got enough positives to be enjoyable at least. Rated PG Violence, Language and intense scenes of children-in- jeopardy. FlashCallahan 24 February Clyde and his wife Stephanie are divorced and their daughters live with their mother and spend the weekends with their father. One day, Clyde stops his car in a yard sale and his youngest, Emily buys an antique carved box and becomes obsessed with it.
She finds the hidden lock and releases an evil spirit that possesses her. Clyde seeks out a specialist and when he sees the box, he explains that it is a Dibbuk Box, where a demon is trapped inside Its basically The Exorcist for the PG generation, and is that sounds the pits, wait until you see the finished product.
It's one of those movies where you end up shouting at the movie because of the sheer stupidity of the characters. Things start going strange when his youngest turns into a goth and starts acting strange. Now what really vexed me the most about this was the fact that he didn't just get rid of it, the moment she started to act a little odd, and when he did, he just threw it away in the nearest dumpster, not burn it, or bury it in the north sea.
But the film states at the beginning, if you try and destroy it, you will get bells palsy, and the only way to get rid of the spirit is to hire a Rabbi who just bounces up and down. It's not well acted, the makers go for the shock factor of loud strings, and the fact that Raimi assisted somewhat on the production, just makes it that little more depressing. Do yourself a favour, watch the exorcist instead With a title like this The Exorcist comes to mind due a few reasons and it showed towards this flick.
A child, Em Natasha Calis is being possessed and one person flies through a window. When Sam Raimi Evil Dead is involved you think you will see gore galore. No gore at all and no green soup flying through the air but it do has a few scary moments. Being based on true events once seen this flick we didn't believe it at all.
It's some kind of Jewish box that delivers the possession. That's what we see at the beginning of this flick when an older woman doing weird things with a hammer.
The box is for sale and it's there that Em sees it and ask her dad to buy it.
