Also, can you slip extra eggs under a peahen for a larger clutch?
There is no exact number of eggs a peahen will sit on. Some will take only a few, whereas others will fit as many under them as possible. I've seen some peahens pack around 30 eggs underneath them! And yes, you can slip in more eggs if you wish. Thanks so much for the info! What exactly is wet bulb humidity? MysteryChicken said:. Click to expand I'm planning to hatch a few Peachicks in Spring. When the breeding season starts for peafowl will differ slightly depending on the weather and climate where you are. Generally speaking, however, you can expect peafowl to be in breeding season from around March to August spanning the spring and summertime. During this period, peahens tend to go through breeding cycles. This means they will lay for around a month, then take a break for days, before starting to lay again. I can tell you one thing for sure, finding a peahen egg during the winter months is pretty much unheard of.
Now you know, first of all, despite most people referring to peacocks as being the ones that lay eggs, peacocks are males and do not lay eggs. As for how many and how often they lay eggs; you can expect a peahen to typically lay around eggs between the months of March and August. When there are two peahens or more in an area often they will lay in the same area, moving the eggs from one site to another, sadly breaking and damaging eggs along the way.
If the peahen starts to sit on the ground, she is vulnerable to foxes. A fox will walk straight up to her and kill her. When your peahens are free ranging, it is best if you can entice them into a pen or shed to sit on their eggs, where they will be safe. Once the peahens start to lay eggs I pen them, moving any eggs already laid into the nest once they have laid another egg.
The natural method of incubation is a lot less reliable than incubating eggs within an incubator. The peahen will frequently break eggs or get off the eggs before they hatch.
