What furniture should i buy

You don't just sit down to eat and then leave. Chances are you and your family spend a lot of time around the dining table doing different tasks such as homework, paying bills, or even sitting down and chatting. The kind of dining chair you buy depends on many things such as the size of your room, how you use it, your style, etc.

Home entertainment centers come in all different shapes and sizes. With the changing look of today's televisions, entertainment centers have evolved, too. You have the choice of buying an entertainment center that completely conceals your equipment or buying one that displays it.

If you need a place to organize all your media as well as equipment, you can find entertainment centers that offer plenty of efficient built-in storage. You should always judge for quality because you are storing expensive and fragile equipment in it. Additionally, make sure you are buying an entertainment center that complies with tip-over rules, and lets your equipment breathe to prevent heat buildup.

Before you buy a table lamp, determine what kind you need. A table lamp is a furniture accessory that can add so much to a room besides light. Since table lamps come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, they can enable you to dress up a room in style. You can choose a table lamp for its decorative value, as much as for the light it provides.

A tall table can be a major source of light in a room, as the taller a lamp the greater its area of illumination. Smaller table lamps can be used accent lighting. Another wonderful thing about table lamps is that you can change the look of a lamp with the style of shade you choose.

And remember, the bulb and wattage you pick should be appropriate for the function and type of your table lamp. Before you buy a coffee table you should ask some yourself how you want the table to function. While a coffee table often ends up being the focal point in a room, it does have other functions than simply looking good. Also, since there is a great variety in materials, you should pick one that best fits your needs.

For instance, you most likely don't want a glass coffee table when you have toddlers. You wouldn't want an easily destructible surface or finish either. Before you buy your coffee table, you also have to pick shape and size. And there are always alternatives to conventional coffee tables, such as ottomans. What do you really need—vs. What items should you buy first vs. Starting with a beloved throw pillow and attempting to build a room around it could be be a recipe for disaster. The rule of thumb: Start with the big pieces and then fill in the details. Are you rushing a purchase just to feel like you are done? Yes, you want to be settled and have a place to put down your glass of water while watching Netflix.

We get it. But better to fight the good fight than live with regret. Are you buying something just to try to make a piece you dislike work better in the room? These are Band-Aids for bullet wounds, people. Rip off the Band-Aid, ditch the couch now, and choose pieces that you will actually love and therefore keep.

Where can you successfully and easily mix in bold patterns? You are so talented and such a blessing to a design-challenged girl like me. Hi Kristin! Carpet is so, so hard — there are a zillion choices, right?

Honestly, my best advice is to simply get lots of samples that you can view in your home — they will look so different in your home versus what they look like in the store. Many carpet stores either allow you to check samples out or there are some places that come to your house with all of their samples. Good luck! These are such great tips Kris. High-low is the way to go! I have invested in upholstered pieces with very bold fabric and years later, had such regret, so sticking with neutrals for the expensive and large scale items is a good idea unless someone has a budget that allows them to completely redecorate every 5 years!

Your fireplace is so stunning! Such great tips! We have two IKEA Ektorp white slipcovered chairs in our living room and they are the most comfortable chairs in my home! I NEVER thought we would be in our current home as long as we have, but the changes we made were all good for resale whenever we move! Hopefully sooner than later; Have a great weekend! Kris, This is a great post.

Most of my earlier errors in buying were because I thought the item was wonderful and the sale was going to end…etc. I love what he did with the couch especially for those of us with pups. Loved this post. It was my fault for letting the professional talk me into a size I knew was too big. Shame on me. Your story sounds so familiar — right after we got married a salesperson talked me into this sofa that was too big for our space — I was SO happy the day that thing started falling apart and I was able to get rid of it!

And thanks for letting me know about that post — I checked it out and LOVE that room — such a cool space! These are such great tips Kris on high and low purchases. Love your Etsy art prints! Kris this post was filled to the brim with great advice. I adore your little sweetheart on the exact same couch that I also own and love. I wanted to invite you to our linky party, Thoughts of Home on Thursday. I would love for you to share your spring tour and even this wonderful post. We offer a chance at a giveaway every week for each participant who links up.
